Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had an Egyptian slave woman named Hagar.Sarai said to Abram, “Look, the LORD has kept me from bearing children. Please have relations with my slave woman; perhaps I can build a family through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. After Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her Egyptian slave woman and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife.Abram had relations with Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she was pregnant, she looked down on her mistress. Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I placed my slave woman in your arms, and when she saw that she was pregnant, she looked down on me. May the LORD judge between me and you.”Abram said to Sarai, “Look, your slave woman is in your hands. Do to her what seems good to you.” Then Sarai mistreated her, and Hagar fled from her.The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s slave woman, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.”The angel of the LORD said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her authority.”The angel of the LORD said to her, “I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too numerous to count.”The angel of the LORD said to her, “Look, you are pregnant and will bear a son. You are to name him Ishmael, because the LORD has heard your affliction. He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand against him; he will dwell opposite all his brothers.”She gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Have I even here gazed after the one who sees me?”Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. It is between Kadesh and Bered.Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram named the son Hagar had borne him Ishmael.Abram was 86 years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
