When Isaac was old and his eyes had grown too dim to see, he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son!” He said to him, “Here I am.”He said, “Look, I am old, and I do not know the day of my death. Now please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, go out into the field, and hunt some game for me.Prepare a savory meal for me, the kind I love, and bring it to me to eat, so that my soul may bless you before I die.”Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So Esau went out into the field to hunt game and bring it back.Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “I heard your father speaking to your brother Esau, saying,‘Bring me game and prepare a savory meal for me to eat, so that I may bless you before the LORD before I die.’Now, my son, obey my voice in what I command you.Go to the flock and bring me two good young goats from there, and I will prepare a savory meal for your father, the kind he loves. You will bring it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies.”Jacob said to his mother Rebekah, “My brother Esau is a hairy man, but I have smooth skin.Perhaps my father will feel me and think I am mocking him. Then I will bring a curse upon myself instead of a blessing.”His mother said to him, “Let your curse be on me, my son. Only obey my voice, and go and bring them to me.”So he went, took them, and brought them to his mother, and his mother prepared a savory meal, the kind his father loved.Rebekah took the best clothes of her older son Esau, which she had with her in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. She put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. She placed the savory meal and the bread she had prepared into the hand of her son Jacob. He came to his father and said, “My father!” He said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please rise and sit down to eat some of my game, so that your soul may bless me.”Isaac said to his son, “How have you found it so quickly, my son?” He said, “Because the LORD your God brought it before me.”Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near so that I may feel you, my son, to know whether you are really my son Esau or not.”Jacob came near to his father Isaac, and he felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are Esau’s hands.”He did not recognize him because his hands were hairy like the hands of his brother Esau, so he blessed him.He said, “Are you really my son Esau?” He said, “I am.”He said, “Bring it near to me, so that I may eat some of my son’s game and my soul may bless you.” He brought it to him, and he ate. He also brought him wine, and he drank. His father Isaac said to him, “Please come near and kiss me, my son.”He came near and kissed him. Isaac smelled the scent of his clothes and blessed him, saying, “See, the scent of my son is like the scent of a field the LORD has blessed.May God give you of the dew of heaven and of the richness of the earth, and an abundance of grain and new wine.May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be those who curse you, and blessed be those who bless you.”Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had barely gone out from the presence of his father Isaac when his brother Esau came in from hunting. He too prepared a savory meal and brought it to his father. He said to his father, “Let my father rise and eat some of his son’s game, so that your soul may bless me.”His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?” He said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it then who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate some of everything before you came and blessed him. Yes, he will be blessed!”When Esau heard his father’s words, he let out a very loud and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me too, my father!”He said, “Your brother came with deceit and took your blessing.”Esau said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob? He has cheated me twice now. He took my birthright, and now he has taken my blessing.” He said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”Isaac answered Esau, “Look, I have made him lord over you and given him all his brothers as servants. I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What then can I do for you, my son?”Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau lifted up his voice and wept. His father Isaac answered him, “Look, your dwelling will be away from the richness of the earth and away from the dew of heaven above.By your sword you will live, and you will serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you will break his yoke off your neck.”Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”The words of her older son Esau were reported to Rebekah. She sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Your brother Esau is consoling himself with the thought of killing you. Now, my son, obey my voice. Rise and flee to my brother Laban at Haran.Stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury turns away, until your brother’s anger turns away from you and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send and bring you back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?”Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth like these, from the daughters of the land, what use will my life be to me?”
