1 Corinthians 8

BTNT-2026-11-04

Now concerning food sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone thinks he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, he is known by him. So concerning the eating of food sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world and that there is no God but one. For even if there are those called gods, whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. But not everyone has this knowledge. Some, because they are still accustomed to the idol, eat the food as something sacrificed to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. But food will not commend us to God. We are no better if we eat and no worse if we do not eat. But take care that this right of yours does not become a stumbling block to the weak. For if someone sees you who have knowledge reclining at a meal in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, weak as it is, be encouraged to eat food sacrificed to idols? For by your knowledge the weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. So when you sin against the brothers and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat, so that I may not cause my brother to stumble.
