2 Chronicles 17

BTNT-2026-11-04

His son Jehoshaphat reigned in his place and strengthened himself against Israel. He stationed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah and placed garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured. The LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David and did not seek the Baals. Instead, he sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments, rather than following the practices of Israel. The LORD established the kingdom in his hand. All Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, and he had riches and honor in abundance. His heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD. He also removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah. In the third year of his reign he sent his officials Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah to teach in the cities of Judah. With them were the Levites Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tob-adonijah, and with them the priests Elishama and Jehoram. They taught in Judah, taking with them the Book of the Law of the LORD. They went throughout all the cities of Judah and taught the people. The terror of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms of the lands surrounding Judah, and they did not wage war against Jehoshaphat. Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts and silver as tribute. The Arabs also brought him flocks: seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred male goats. Jehoshaphat grew exceedingly great. He built fortresses and storage cities in Judah. He had many undertakings in the cities of Judah, and fighting men, mighty men of valor, in Jerusalem. This was their enrollment by ancestral families. From Judah, among the commanders of thousands: Adnah the commander, with three hundred thousand mighty men of valor; next to him, Jehohanan the commander, with two hundred and eighty thousand; next to him, Amasiah son of Zichri, who had willingly offered himself to the LORD, with two hundred thousand mighty men of valor. From Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of valor, with two hundred thousand men armed with bow and shield; next to him, Jehozabad, with a hundred and eighty thousand men equipped for military service. These served the king, besides those the king had stationed in the fortified cities throughout Judah.
