We turned and went up by the way of Bashan. Og king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, for battle at Edrei. The LORD said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, together with all his people and his land. You shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.’The LORD our God also gave Og king of Bashan and all his people into our hand. We struck him until we left him no survivor. We captured all his cities at that time. There was not a city we did not take from them: sixty cities, the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. All these were fortified cities with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled towns. We devoted them to destruction, as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon, devoting every city to destruction, with its men, women, and little ones. But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as plunder for ourselves. At that time we took from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land on this side of the Jordan, from the Arnon Valley to Mount Hermon:(The Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir.)all the cities of the plateau, all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.(For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the Rephaim. Look, his bed was an iron bed. Is it not in Rabbah of the Ammonites? It was over thirteen feet long and about six feet wide, measured by the common cubit.)Of this land we possessed at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and Gadites the territory from Aroer by the Arnon Valley and half the hill country of Gilead with its cities.I gave the rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, to the half-tribe of Manasseh. The whole region of Argob, with all Bashan, is called the land of Rephaim.Jair son of Manasseh took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites. He called the settlements of Bashan Havvoth-jair after his own name, to this day.To Machir I gave Gilead. To the Reubenites and Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead to the Arnon Valley, with the middle of the valley as the boundary, and as far as the Jabbok Valley, the boundary of the Ammonites, and the Arabah with the Jordan as the boundary, from Chinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, below the slopes of Pisgah on the east.At that time I commanded you, saying, ‘The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your valiant men shall cross over armed before your brothers, the Israelites.Only your wives, your little ones, and your livestock (I know you have abundant livestock) shall remain in the cities I have given you, until the LORD gives rest to your brothers as to you, and they too possess the land that the LORD your God is giving them on the other side of the Jordan. Then each of you shall return to the possession I have given you.’At that time I also commanded Joshua, saying, ‘Your eyes have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings. So the LORD will do to all the kingdoms into which you are crossing.Do not fear them, for the LORD your God is himself the one who fights for you.’At that time I pleaded with the LORD, saying,‘Lord GOD, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do works and mighty deeds like yours? Please let me cross over and see the good land on the other side of the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon.’But the LORD was angry with me because of you and did not listen to me. The LORD said to me, ‘Enough! Do not speak to me again about this matter.Go up to the top of Pisgah and lift up your eyes westward, northward, southward, and eastward. See it with your eyes, for you shall not cross this Jordan.Commission Joshua, strengthen him, and encourage him, for he shall cross over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land you will see.’So we stayed in the valley opposite Beth-peor.
