“If a man steals an ox or a sheep or goat and slaughters it or sells it, he shall repay five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep or goats for the sheep or goat.If a thief is found breaking in and is struck so that he dies, the one who struck him shall not incur bloodguilt. But if the sun has risen on him, the one who struck him shall incur bloodguilt. The thief shall surely make restitution; if he has nothing, he shall be sold for his theft. If the stolen animal is found alive in his possession, whether ox, donkey, sheep, or goat, he shall repay double. If a man lets his livestock graze in a field or vineyard and lets it loose so that it grazes in another man’s field, he shall make restitution from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard. If a fire breaks out and catches in thorns, so that stacked grain, standing grain, or the field is consumed, the one who started the fire shall surely make restitution. If a man gives his neighbor money or goods for safekeeping, and they are stolen from the man’s house, the thief, if found, shall repay double. If the thief is not found, the owner of the house shall come before the judges to establish that he has not laid a hand on his neighbor’s property. For every case of wrongdoing involving an ox, a donkey, a sheep or goat, a garment, or any lost thing of which someone says, ‘This is it!’ the case of both parties shall come before the judges. The one whom the judges declare guilty shall repay double to his neighbor. If a man gives his neighbor a donkey, an ox, a sheep or goat, or any other animal for safekeeping, and it dies, is injured, or is taken captive, with no one seeing it,an oath by the LORD shall be between the two of them, that he has not laid a hand on his neighbor’s property. The owner shall accept it, and the other shall not make restitution. But if it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to its owner. If it is torn to pieces, he shall bring it as evidence; he shall not make restitution for what was torn.If a man borrows an animal from his neighbor, and it is injured or dies while its owner is not with it, he shall surely make restitution. If its owner is with it, he shall not make restitution. If it was hired, the loss is covered by its hire.If a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall surely pay the bride price for her to become his wife.If her father firmly refuses to give her to him, he shall weigh out silver equal to the bride price for virgins. You shall not let a sorceress live.Whoever has sexual relations with an animal shall surely be put to death.Whoever sacrifices to any god except the LORD alone shall be devoted to destruction. You shall not mistreat a resident foreigner or oppress him, for you were resident foreigners in the land of Egypt. You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child. If you do afflict any of them, and that person cries out to me, I will surely hear that person’s cry.My anger will burn, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives shall be widows and your children fatherless. If you lend money to any of my people who is poor among you, you shall not act toward him as a creditor. You shall not impose interest on him.If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, you shall return it to him by sunset, for it is his only covering, the garment for his skin. In what shall he sleep? If he cries out to me, I will hear, for I am gracious. You shall not revile God or curse a ruler of your people. You shall not delay the offering from the fullness of your harvest and the juice of your presses. You shall give me the firstborn of your sons. You shall do the same with your oxen and your sheep and goats: the young animal shall be with its mother seven days; on the eighth day you shall give it to me.You shall be holy men to me. You shall not eat flesh torn by beasts in the field; you shall throw it to the dogs.”
