Job 31

BTNT-2026-11-04

I made a covenant with my eyes;
how then could I gaze at a virgin?
What portion is there from God above, what inheritance from the Almighty on high? Is not calamity for the unjust, and disaster for those who work evil? Does he not see my ways and count all my steps? If I have walked with falsehood and my foot has hurried toward deceit, let him weigh me in just balances, and God will know my integrity. If my step has turned from the way, my heart has followed my eyes, and a stain has clung to my hands, let me sow and another eat, and let my shoots be uprooted. If my heart has been enticed by a woman and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door, let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down over her. For that is a shameful act, an iniquity punishable by judges, for it is a fire that consumes to Abaddon and would uproot all my produce. If I have despised the claim of my manservant and maidservant when they contended with me, what will I do when God rises?
When he calls me to account, what will I answer him?
Did not the one who made me in the womb make him?
Did not the same one form us in the womb?
If I have withheld from the poor what they desired and made the widow's eyes fail, if I have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten from it —for from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and from my mother's womb I guided her— if I have seen one perishing for lack of clothing and a needy person without a covering, if his loins have not blessed me as he warmed himself with the fleece of my sheep, if I have raised my hand against the fatherless because I saw my help in the gate, let my shoulder fall from its blade, and let my arm be broken from its socket! For calamity from God was a terror to me, and before his majesty I could not endure. If I have made gold my confidence and said to fine gold, ‘You are my trust,’ if I have rejoiced because my wealth was great and my hand had gained much, if I have looked at the sun as it shone and the moon moving in splendor, and my heart was secretly enticed, and my hand kissed my mouth, this too would be an iniquity punishable by judges, for I would have denied God above. If I have rejoiced at the ruin of one who hated me and exulted when evil found him— I have not let my palate sin by demanding his life with a curse. Have the men of my tent not said, ‘Who has not had his fill of his meat?’ The sojourner did not spend the night outside;
I opened my doors to the traveler.
If I have covered my transgressions as men do, hiding my iniquity in my bosom, because I dreaded the great multitude and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silent and did not go out the door— If only I had someone to hear me!
Look, here is my signature!
Let the Almighty answer me!
If only my adversary had written his charge!
Surely I would carry it on my shoulder;
I would bind it on myself like crowns.
I would declare to him the number of my steps;
like a prince I would approach him.
If my land cries out against me and its furrows weep together, if I have eaten its yield without payment and caused its owners to lose their life, let thorns come up instead of wheat, and foul weeds instead of barley!”
The words of Job are ended.
