These are the inheritances the people of Israel received in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the ancestral houses of the tribes of the people of Israel allotted to them.Their inheritance was by lot, as the LORD had commanded through Moses for the nine tribes and the half-tribe.For Moses had given an inheritance to the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan, but he gave the Levites no inheritance among them. The descendants of Joseph formed two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. They gave the Levites no share in the land, except cities to live in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and possessions. The people of Israel did as the LORD had commanded Moses and divided the land. Then the descendants of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses, the man of God, about me and you at Kadesh-barnea.I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the LORD, sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him back a report according to what was in my heart. My brothers who went up with me made the people’s hearts melt, but I fully followed the LORD my God.So Moses swore that day, ‘Surely the land where your foot has trodden will be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you fully followed the LORD my God.’Now look, the LORD has kept me alive, as he said, these forty-five years since the LORD spoke this word to Moses, when Israel was walking in the wilderness. And now look, today I am eighty-five years old.I am still as strong today as I was on the day Moses sent me. My strength now is as it was then, for war and for going out and coming in.Now give me this hill country that the LORD spoke of that day. For you heard that day that the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. Perhaps the LORD will be with me, and I will drive them out, as the LORD has said.”Then Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. So Hebron has been the inheritance of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he fully followed the LORD, the God of Israel.Hebron was formerly called Kiriath-arba. Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim. And the land rested from war.
