Judges 5
BTNT-2026-11-04
Give ear, O rulers!
I, to the LORD, I will sing;
I will sing praise to the LORD, the God of Israel. LORD, when you went out from Seir, when you marched from the fields of Edom, the earth trembled.
The heavens also poured, the clouds also poured water. The mountains melted before the LORD, Sinai itself before the LORD, the God of Israel. In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the roads were deserted, and travelers took winding paths. Village life ceased in Israel;
it ceased until I, Deborah, arose, until I arose as a mother in Israel. They chose new gods;
then war was at the gates.
Was a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel? My heart is with the commanders of Israel, those who offered themselves willingly among the people.
Bless the LORD! You who ride on white female donkeys, you who sit on carpets, and you who travel the road, tell of it! Far from the sound of archers, at the watering places, there they recount the righteous acts of the LORD, his righteous acts for the villagers in Israel.
Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates. Awake, awake, Deborah!
Awake, awake, sing a song!
Arise, Barak!
Lead away your captives, son of Abinoam! Then a remnant of the people came down against the mighty;
the LORD came down for me against the warriors. From Ephraim came those whose roots were in Amalek;
after you, Benjamin, with your peoples.
From Machir came down commanders, and from Zebulun those who wield the recruiter’s staff. The princes of Issachar were with Deborah;
Issachar was also with Barak, sent into the valley at his heels.
Among the divisions of Reuben there were great resolves of heart. Why did you stay among the sheepfolds, listening to the whistling for the flocks?
Among the divisions of Reuben there were great searchings of heart. Gilead stayed beyond the Jordan.
And Dan, why did he remain by the ships?
Asher sat at the seashore and stayed by his harbors. Zebulun was a people who risked their lives to the death, as did Naphtali on the heights of the field. Kings came and fought;
then the kings of Canaan fought at Taanach, by the waters of Megiddo.
They took no spoil of silver. From heaven the stars fought;
from their courses they fought against Sisera. The Kishon River swept them away, the ancient river, the Kishon River.
March on, my soul, in strength! Then the horses’ hooves pounded from the galloping, the galloping of his mighty steeds. ‘Curse Meroz,’ said the angel of the LORD.
‘Bitterly curse its inhabitants, because they did not come to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.’ Most blessed of women is Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite;
most blessed of women in tents. He asked for water;
she gave him milk.
In a noble’s bowl she offered curds. She reached out her hand for the tent peg, her right hand for the workers’ hammer.
She struck Sisera, crushed his head, shattered and pierced his temple. Between her feet he sank, he fell, he lay.
Between her feet he sank, he fell.
Where he sank, there he fell, slain. Through the window Sisera’s mother looked out and cried through the lattice: ‘Why is his chariot so long in coming?
Why are the hoofbeats of his chariots delayed?’ The wisest of her ladies answered her;
she too repeated her words to herself: ‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoil?
A woman, two women for each man;
spoil of dyed cloth for Sisera, spoil of embroidered dyed cloth, dyed cloth, two pieces of embroidery for the necks of those who take the spoil.’ So may all your enemies perish, LORD!
But may those who love him be like the sun when it rises in its might.”
And the land had rest forty years.
