Lamentations 5
BTNT-2026-11-04
Look and see our disgrace. Our inheritance has passed to strangers, our houses to foreigners. We have become orphans, without a father;
our mothers are like widows. We pay to drink our own water;
our wood comes at a price. Our pursuers are at our necks;
we are weary and given no rest. We have given our hand to Egypt and Assyria, to have our fill of bread. Our fathers sinned and are no more, but we bear their iniquities. Slaves rule over us;
no one delivers us from their hand. We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the wilderness. Our skin burns like an oven from the scorching heat of famine. Women have been raped in Zion, virgins in the cities of Judah. Officials have been hung by their hands;
elders have not been honored. Young men bear the burden of grinding, and boys stumble under loads of wood. The elders have left the gate;
the young men have left their music. The joy of our heart has ceased;
our dancing has turned to mourning. The crown has fallen from our head.
Woe to us, for we have sinned! Because of this our heart is faint;
because of these things our eyes grow dim, because Mount Zion lies desolate, with foxes roaming over it. But you, LORD, remain enthroned forever;
your throne endures from generation to generation. Why do you forget us forever and forsake us for so long? Restore us to yourself, LORD, and we will return.
Renew our days as of old, unless you have utterly rejected us and are exceedingly angry with us.
