Proverbs 17
BTNT-2026-11-04
a liar gives ear to a malicious tongue. Whoever mocks the poor insults his Maker;
whoever rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished. Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and fathers are the glory of their children. Eloquent speech does not suit a fool, much less lying lips a nobleman. A bribe is a charm in the eyes of its owner;
wherever he turns, he succeeds. Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but whoever repeats a matter separates close friends. A rebuke goes deeper into a discerning person than a hundred blows into a fool. An evil man seeks only rebellion, and a cruel messenger will be sent against him. Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool in his folly. If anyone repays evil for good, evil will not depart from his house. The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so leave off the quarrel before it breaks out. Whoever acquits the wicked and whoever condemns the righteous are both an abomination to the LORD. Why is there money in a fool’s hand to buy wisdom when he has no sense? A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. A man who lacks sense pledges his hand and puts up security in the presence of his neighbor. Whoever loves strife loves transgression;
whoever raises his doorway high seeks ruin. One with a crooked heart finds no good, and one with a perverse tongue falls into trouble. The one who fathers a fool has sorrow, and the father of a senseless son has no joy. A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones. A wicked man accepts a bribe from the fold of a garment to pervert the paths of justice. Wisdom is before the discerning, but the eyes of a fool are at the ends of the earth. A foolish son is grief to his father and bitterness to her who bore him. To punish the righteous is not good, nor to strike nobles for their uprightness. Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and one who is cool in spirit has understanding. Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise;
when he shuts his lips, he is considered discerning.
